Conditions for which shockwave therapy may be considered
Research supports ESWT for some presentations of plantar fasciitis and certain tendinopathies. Depending on the diagnosis, clinicians may also discuss it for selected tendon, muscle or other soft-tissue concerns. A similar symptom can have several causes, so examination and an appropriate diagnosis come before treatment.

What to expect at an appointment
Your provider will review your history, examine the area and discuss whether shockwave therapy is appropriate. If you proceed, a handheld applicator delivers acoustic pulses to the selected area. Intensity and treatment duration are adjusted to the condition and your tolerance. Care may also include activity guidance, rehabilitation exercises, manual therapy or chiropractic care when appropriate.
Benefits, limitations and safety
Some patients report reduced pain or improved function after a course of care, while others may experience little or no change. Temporary soreness, redness, bruising or increased sensitivity can occur. Shockwave therapy may not be appropriate with certain bleeding risks, medications, infections, pregnancy-related considerations, recent procedures or other health conditions. Tell your provider about your health history and medications before treatment.
Urgent or unexplained symptoms, significant trauma, progressive weakness, fever or other warning signs may require medical evaluation or referral. ESWT is not a substitute for appropriate medical diagnosis.
