Peripheral neuropathy describes damage or dysfunction in nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms may include numbness, tingling, burning pain, weakness, balance problems, or changes in sensation. Because neuropathy has many possible causes, identifying the cause is an essential first step.
Common causes of neuropathy
Diabetes is a common cause, but neuropathy may also be associated with vitamin deficiencies, medication effects, alcohol use, infections, autoimmune conditions, nerve compression, injury, or other medical disorders. Some cases require blood tests, imaging, nerve studies, or specialist evaluation.
When to seek medical evaluation
New, progressive, unexplained, or one-sided numbness or weakness should be medically evaluated. Sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, facial drooping, difficulty speaking, chest pain, or severe symptoms require urgent care. Chiropractic care does not replace evaluation or treatment of the underlying medical cause of peripheral neuropathy.
How conservative care may help
A chiropractor may assess whether joint, muscle, posture, or movement factors are contributing to a patient’s discomfort or function. When appropriate, care may include mobility work, manual therapy, exercise guidance, and ergonomic recommendations. These approaches may support comfort and movement for selected patients, but evidence does not support presenting spinal manipulation as a cure for peripheral nerve damage.
Treatment recommendations depend on the examination, diagnosis, medical history, and individual response. Coordination with a primary care clinician, neurologist, physical therapist, or other healthcare professional may be appropriate.
